How to Block Adult Websites on Your Phone Permanently

"Permanently" is the word doing all the work in this search. Blocking adult websites on a phone is easy. Dozens of apps and settings do it in minutes. Making the block stay when you're the one holding the settings is the actual problem. Here's every layer, and how to make the whole stack permanent in practice.

Layer 1: SafeSearch (5 minutes, weakest)

Google SafeSearch (and the equivalent in Bing/DuckDuckGo settings) filters explicit results out of searches. Turn it on in the Google app under Settings → SafeSearch.

It's worth doing, since it removes accidental exposure, but it only filters search results. Direct URLs, apps, and embedded content sail through. And it un-toggles as fast as it toggles.

Layer 2: Private DNS (10 minutes, phone-wide)

Android's Private DNS setting lets you route all domain lookups through a filtering resolver. Settings → Network & internet → Private DNS → Private DNS provider hostname, then enter a family-filter resolver such as CleanBrowsing's.

This blocks adult domains in every app and browser and survives across Wi-Fi and mobile data. On iPhone, DNS profiles achieve something similar. Weaknesses: it's a text field you can blank out in seconds, and any VPN app overrides it.

Layer 3: A blocker app (strongest blocking)

But note what all three layers share: you can undo each one in under a minute, silently, at zero cost. That's why "permanent" setups keep turning out to be temporary. For a child's phone, a parent's password fixes this. For your own phone, you need something else.

Layer 4: Make unblocking expensive (the "permanent" part)

Permanence doesn't come from a setting no one can change (Android doesn't allow that, by design). It comes from attaching a consequence to changing it.
