How to Block NSFW on Reddit (Settings That Stick, and the One That Doesn't)

3 min read · Updated July 7, 2026

Reddit has a built-in mature-content setting, and turning it off takes under a minute. Here are the exact steps, then the honest part: why that toggle alone rarely survives a bad night, and what to layer on top so it does.

Turn off NSFW in Reddit's settings

In the app: tap your avatar → SettingsAccount settings → turn off Show mature content (I'm over 18). While you're there, turn on Blur mature images as a backstop.

On the web: reddit.com → User SettingsFeed settings → disable Adult content.

In search: Settings → turn on SafeSearch, so NSFW results and thumbnails stay out of search even when other settings drift.

Mute the communities that keep finding you

The feed algorithm resurfaces what you've engaged with. Clean the inputs:

  1. On any unwanted subreddit: tap the three dots → Mute community. Muted subreddits vanish from your home feed and recommendations.
  2. Unfollow and unsave anything you'd rather not see again; saved posts are a relapse bookmark folder.
  3. In Settings → Account settings, disable personalized recommendations if you want the algorithm to stop guessing.

Why this setup keeps un-toggling

Every step above lives inside your own account, which means the person who set it can unset it, silently, in seconds. Reddit even asks you again on some NSFW subreddits, one tap and you're through. If you're doing this for focus or taste, the settings are enough. If you're doing it because Reddit is your porn gateway, the toggle is a sticky note on an unlocked door, the same pattern we cover in why porn blockers don't work.

There's also a structural gap: logged out, or in a different browser, the settings don't follow you. Incognito mode sheds your account preferences entirely.

Close the gap below the browser

A system-level blocker doesn't care which account, app, or tab you're in. Pledgely blocks porn domains across your whole Android device through a local VPN, so the porn sites Reddit links out to simply don't load, in the official app, any browser, and incognito alike. Nothing you browse is logged.

What makes it hold where toggles don't: you attach a daily pledge of $1 to $100, and it's charged only if you deactivate the blocker (pause it, disable the VPN, or remove device admin in Hard Mode). Keep it on and every daily hold is released back to your card. The Reddit toggle stays reversible; the thing behind it stops being worth reversing.

The three-layer setup

  1. Reddit settings off, SafeSearch on, gateway subreddits muted (steps above).
  2. Pledgely installed with a pledge your 2am self would refuse to pay.
  3. Phone out of the bedroom, since Reddit scrolling at night is where most of these spirals start; see how to stop watching porn at night.
